Mandy tapped away on her keyboard at an alarming rate. She was together, efficient, organized â and miserable. Work was going well â ish. She had been without Jake for two months and was keeping herself busy with everything and anything she could, even things that didnât concern her, much to her colleaguesâ annoyance. Maggie was more furious with Mandy than ever.
âYou donât need to take the coffee in to Michael, thatâs my job. Now let me do it,â said Maggie with gritted teeth. The two girls had the jug of coffee between them and were yanking at it as if it was a tug-of-war competition.
âItâs fine, I have to talk to Michael anyway,â said Mandy, smiling with clenched teeth, yanking it even harder.
âWhatâs got into you, you power freak!â Maggie retorted, struggling with all her might to yank the jug back.
âWhat did you call me?â Mandy gasped, releasing her grip ever so slightly.
âWhat you are! A power freak!â Maggie tugged with frustration. âYouâre driving everyone nuts! Go and get laid or something, and calm the fuck down!â Maggie was losing her rag.
âYou bitch!â yelled Mandy.
âYou fat bitch!â yelled Maggie, still tugging at the glass jar as if it was the most important thing in the world.
Ouch! That comment hurt Mandy. Food and alcohol had been a great help most evenings, and since breaking up with Jake, yes, her jeans felt a little tight, but this little cow was taking it too far! Mandy felt her rage pumping her heart fast and her cheeks filling with pink colour. âI can lose a few pounds. Shame you canât grow, you stunted little midget!â
âFuck you!â
âFuck off!â
âWhat the hell is going on?â bellowed Michael, coming out of his office. âItâs like a fucking circus in here.â
At that point Maggie, still tugging at the jug, tumbled backwards with the full jug of black coffee. It splashed and stained her crisp white Gap shirt and the front of her cropped beige Capri trousers. Maggie saw red, her eyes flashed with a madness and she launched herself at Mandy.
Mandy tried to shake her off, spinning around the office trying to chuck Maggie, who now had her legs clenched tightly around Mandyâs waist and looked like she was trying to bite her. The growling noises coming from Maggie were bizarre. As the girls wrestled quite an audience gathered.
Michael decided enough was enough. âMaggie, youâre like a crazed banshee! Get off Mandy right this second!â
Andrew and the rest of the office were all standing around watching the show; their faces looked shocked but then a nervous laughter filled the air.
Maggie slowly climbed down from a rather dishevelled Mandy and put her straying red hair behind her ears as she tried to comprehend what the hell had just happened. Years of resentment had just exploded and now there was no denying it.
âMichael, Iâm sorry, I donât know what came over me, but she has become overwhelming, unbearable actually. Sheâs trying to take my job away from me.â She shot Mandy a look of hatred.
